| Brite iD, the UK based manufacturer
of contactless chip products for electronic passports, identity
cards and other smart card applications, will be exhibiting
for the first time at Cartes 2005 on stand 3F074 in the Identification
Area. The company will be showing its range of iLam™
e-passport covers and polycarbonate data pages and will be
introducing two new products: a hinged e-ID/e-travel card
and a PET passport data page.
Brite iD’s products are based on its iLam™
laminating process which embeds a contactless chip and antenna
in an elastomer core between two outside layers of sheet material.
The elastomer core provides a high level of protection to
the chip against damage by flexing or impact and ensures that
the travel document will meet the durability requirements
of passport and travel authorities. The laminating process
uses no adhesive, so it is not possible to remove and replace
the chip without causing irreparable damage to the cover or
data page and destroying the functionality of the chip and
antenna.
The new iLam™ hinged travel
card is designed for ID, travel and other applications and
offers double the print area compared to standard ID1 cards.
This allows the printing of additional personal information,
instructions for use or promotional messages. The fixed information
is printed onto the PET outer layers of the card prior to
lamination.

The card is subsequently overprinted
with the variable information in full colour by inkjet personalisation
printers. The PET hinge is an integral part of the card formed
during the lamination process. The card has a special anti-skimming
feature that prevents reading of the chip while the card is
closed – an important security feature in response to
privacy concerns. The final product is a highly attractive
and durable product which can be used to replace existing
paper based hinged travel and similar documents. The card
can also be provided without the chip and suitable for hand
infilling of the personal data.
The Brite iD PET e-passport data page is a highly attractive
alternative to a traditional polycarbonate page, offering
extremely high quality print quality as well as full colour
personalisation. The data page has an integral elastomer hinge
for easy sewing into the passport booklet and does not suffer
from any of the durability problems associated with polycarbonate
pages.
Brite iD will also be showing its e-passport covers, which
can be used on existing passport lines without any modification
to the production equipment or processes, and its laser engraveable
polycarbonate data pages.
